When it comes to studying, it’s vital that students have an optimised environment. This will allow them to focus better, concentrate on the tasks at hand, and learn with a great efficiency. The goal is for them to improve their grades, but reduce the time to achieve the higher grades.

A way to help students achieve this is to set their environment in proper order. According to Fung Shui, a student’s study space is a reflection of their mind. If their space is messy and unorganised, so is their mind. But if their study space is clean, ordered and functions well, so is their mind.

For this reason, we want to make sure students have a properly setup space to study in. It should reflect their goal of spending less time studying, but still having increased grades. This means the space should be organised, it should be clean, and it should be comfortable. There’s no need for distractions from being uncomfortable.

Here are 5 simple suggestions to help students have a better space to study in.

Patterns are closely related to IQ and intelligence.

1. Study with Greenery

It’s been shown in many scientific studies that when people are more productive when they can see plants. This can be either in front of them or out of the corner of their eye. It really doesn’t matter, as long as it’s within their sight.

To take advantage of this, students can get simple houseplants and have them near to their study space. There are also lots of plants that won’t affect allergies.

The interesting part of these studies has also been that there is a positive effect with using fake plants. Real plants have a much larger positive effect though.

It’s believed that not only does the plant help with relaxing the mind, but it also increases the amount of oxygen and reduces the amount of carbon dioxide in the air.

Abstract thought is the ability to think bigger and deeper.

2. Use correct heights at the desk

Posture is extremely important in study, because good posture will allow the student to study comfortably for longer periods of time. The longer they’re comfortable, the longer before they begin to wiggle in their chair and think about moving from their desk.

Here are some points on correct heights and distances:

  • Your chair should be low enough so that your feet comfortably rest on the floor to protect your hips and back.
  • The middle of the computer screen should be at eye level to protect your shoulders and neck.
  • The wrists should be comfortably resting on the desk while typing to prevent RSI.
  • The computer screen should be further than an arm’s length away from the eyes.

To increase the time a student can study, make sure they aren’t leaning forward or slouching. They’re back should be tall, like a string is pulling them up towards the roof.

If you think clearly, you’re in control.

3. Be cool

Temperature is a key component of being comfortable while studying. Making sure the room is kept at a comfortable temperature is beneficial.

Generally, a temperature around 20oC / 70oF is recommended. This seems to be about the Goldilocks temperature for most people to be able to focus at. Keep in mind, their preferred temperature may not be optimal to study in.

If the room’s too hot, it’s good to either turn on an air conditioner, put a fan on, or open a window. Sometimes, a combination of all 3 is helpful. If it feels stuffy and warm in the room, you can open a window and rapidly open and close the room’s door. This will pump the hot air out of the room.

If the room’s too cool, it’s easy to rug up. Grab your favourite tracksuit pants, thick socks, and / or hoodie. This will help you stay warm. If it’s extremely cold, you can always focus on having some extra layers on.

4. Let there be Light!

When studying, it’s important that the student can see what they’re doing. This will allow them to easily read what they’re doing and to better memorise the content. It will also help them write and type.

If we consider work longevity, we should also consider the health of our eyes. Studying in bad light is horrible for our eyes.

Make sure the room is well-lit, with lots of light from above the work station and lots of light coming from behind you too.

Lastly, it’s always good to prevent eye strain. Removing the blue light from screens will drastically help keep sore eyes and headaches away. It’ll turn your screen an orange-ish hue, but you’ll be amazed how good your eyes feel almost instantly.

5. Be tidy

Make sure the study space is tidy.

This means it should be dusted regularly, the floor should be vacuumed, paper should be sorted into helpful piles.

This does not mean having nothing on your desk. Ordered chaos is absolutely fine, but it must be ordered and still useable.

This also extends to the space around your desk. There should be enough space around you that you can get up from the desk do some push ups, sit ups and star jumps.

That’s not to say that you will do this, but it’s to show that you have room to move if you need to or want to.
