Which subjects do you specialise in?
At this stage, Square Root specialises in Maths and English only.
In the future, we look to expand our subject range to help more students.
This improved range will include the other STEM subjects (Sciences, Technology, Engineering Maths), and include the L-SHAPE subjects (Languages, Sociology, Humanities, Arts, Psychology, Economics).
My child's falling behind in school, can you help?
Yes.
We specialise in helping students that have fallen behind in their Maths and English school work.
No matter the age and no matter their current level, we believe every student can do better and it’s our goal to give them that opportunity.
My child's getting good grades already, do they need tutoring?
It depends.
We see tutoring as more than just a chance to increase their grades. It’s a chance to unlock their potential to learn.
They may be getting good grades at their current level, but there’s always more that can be done. Here’s some things to think about in this situation:
– Are they getting advanced content to work on?
– Are they set up to begin their final school exams?
– Are they enjoying their work?
– Are they confident in their work?
– Could they understand the content better?
If you think they could be helped by tutoring you can learn more by booking a Discovery Call.
Will my child get bored in school after doing tutoring?
No.
We haven’t seen that. Tutoring is made to complement the learning done in school, not to replace it.
For this reason, we wouldn’t expect a student to suddenly be bored at school.
How long will it take to catch up, if my child is behind at school?
It depends.
Each student is different with how quickly they improve. Sometimes, you’ll see instant change. Other times, it might take a while.
It’s important to remember that the last place improvement will be seen is in test scores. You’ll see improvement in their organisation, dedication, persistance, effort, enjoyment, etc before you see an improvement in test scores.
If you can see these improvements, rest assured a large change in their test scores is coming.
Why isn't my child progressing faster?
There’s a number of reasons that a student may not be progressing quickly.
This could be related to their personality or learning style. It could be because they don’t like the subject. It could also be because their missing fundamental knowledge in a lower level concept.
There are so many reasons, and this is why it’s important to have someone individually evaluate the student, whether it’s from tutoring or in another way.
Do I need to keep my child in tutoring from year to year?
No.
Our goal is to get our students to be independent learners. We use the subjects of Maths and English as a way to teach them proper study habits.
The goal is to have students so confident and capable at their topic, they no longer feel they need us.
This can take time, but once a student reaches their learning goals we love to see them happily finish with us.
What is the cost of tutoring?
It depends.
It would be best to discuss your specific circumstances and goals with a tutor, so we can evaluate what would be best for you.

What's the best age to start tutoring?
It depends.
Our suggestion is to start tutoring as soon as any issues in a subject’s content is noticed.
This allows the tutor to work through 1 or 2 specific issues a student has, without the need to go backwards in content.
This is much, much better for students than coming with 30 issues and not understanding a range of fundamental concepts. This is much harder for students to work through, and takes much more time.
The earlier, the better for the students. It’s also much less time consuming to get on track and make improvements.
Does online tutoring actually work?
Yes.
Tutoring is transferring expertise in a subject to a student with appropriate communication. We’ve been successfully tutoring students online for over 10 years.

We've done online tutoring before, what makes Square Root different?
We believe there are 3 main concepts that make Square Root better than other online tutors.
1) Experience
With over 10 years of online tutoring experience, we stand out. We understand the importance of tutoring, and how to be effective in an online learning environment.
2) Systems
We’ve built our systems around being online tutors. This means, students get the best tutoring available while online with us.
3) Training
Tutors are purposely trained for tutoring in an online environment. They’re trained how best to handle situations and communication while online.
If you’d like to discuss your situation in more detail to see whether online tutoring would work for you, you can book a Discovery Call.
We had to do online learning with school and didn't like it, how is Square Root different?
Experience.
Square Root’s been doing online tutoring for 10 years, while schools have never really done online.
This means our tutors are highly trained and capable in this setting, while teachers generally aren’t. This makes a huge difference in how best to run a Private Session or a Group Class.
For instance, a teacher at school in an offline classroom can yell at a student if the student is misbehaving. An online tutor can’t, as the student can simply put the teacher on mute.
This means online tutors must be appropriately trained so that these classic classroom management tactics aren’t used, because they don’t work when online.
We’re aware of these differences and train our tutors to handle these situations with ease, while schools and universities still appear to be unaware of the differences between online and offline education.
What platform do you use for Sessions / Classes?
ZOOM.
We think this is currently the best platform on the market for running online Sessions and Classes.
We’ve tested other platforms, but found they weren’t as user friendly, simple to use, and capable of the same functions.
